Work Experience
Fall 2008 - present: User Experience Engineer, startup
Working at a small startup, as a software developer using Ruby on Rails. My primary focus is on user experience and building a conistent and easy-to-use user interface for the service application we are building.
Summer 2006 - Fall 2008: Software Engineer, CallWave
Worked at CallWave, Inc as a software engineer. Hired a few months after graduating college, I joined an engineering team of about 40. Over the course of the two years I worked under various people in a range of departments. First a quick stint in QA (quality assurance), then on to the "client team" which was in charge of maintaining and adding features to our Win32 desktop application for taking calls while on a dialup connection.
After some restructuring, I ended up doing work for the web team and helped re-architect a Web 2.0 (ajax driven) web application for managing calls, voicemail, contacts, faxes and more. I did a lot of object-oriented Javascript development, as well as HTML/CSS layout when needed. Then the company switched directions again and I helped head up some Flex/Air (Flash 9) projects. We ported some existing functionality from our web and desktop clients, and also began work on a susbstantial project to take over the online collaboration/meeting/conferencing space (www.fuzemeeting.com).
Fall 2004 - Summer 2006: Web Developer, self-employed
While going to school (and during the breaks) I did contract work for various companies. I mostly wrote web applications in PHP/MySQL. I did the initial design and prototype of Connexsus (now Zloop), as well as built the initial version of Optor Systems. I believe most of the original code is still used now (as of 2009) but I am not certain as I have lost track of that project over the years.
During this time I also created a customized web application for a non-profit in town that shelters endangered youth. The project was as an internship at school, unfortunately it was never launched live due to some corporate politics and shuffling of feet. But it provided me with yet more PHP/database/web design experience that I was able to use in my future jobs.
